Almost done with the first season! :D
Chapter VI: Tsumihoroboshi [Sin-Atonement]
Q: Why is Rina such a big deal in this chapter? We never see Rena's problem with her before.
A: Apparently several things are needed to trigger Rena's spiral into madness re: Rina and her father. Part of it is how close Rina ends up getting to her father and whether she meets Kasai.
Q: Was Rina really pregnant?
A: Does it really matter?
Q: Who is the woman Kasai talks about?
A: In all likelihood, it might just be Sonozaki Akane. It's revealed Kasai had a crush on her when they were younger.
Q: Why doesn't Oishi pick up Rena killed Rina and Teppei, like he figures out Keiichi did in Tatarigoroshi-hen?
A: Their methods and circumstances were different. Rena did it at night in her 'hidden' place, and then got the help of her friends in burying the bodies. Furthermore, Rena did it randomly while Keiichi did it on the night of the Watanagashi festival. Anyone who disappears on the night of the Watanagashi festival automatically gets bumped up to "possible victim" status by the police.
Q: How does Rena's father react to Rina and Teppei being killed? He sort of disappears into a plot hole.
A: In the games and manga, there's a scene where Rena wonders if her father will come to his senses now that Rina is dead. If he still is attached to her or what. But she goes to talk with him, and finds him cursing himself for ever believing in 'that woman' and how he feels like a real idiot, and where is he going to get that much money anyway? Rena just smiles and tells him he probably won't have to worry any more.
Q: "Okonogi Movers"? Those are the Yamainu, right?
A: At first I thought they really were a random moving company, but given the significance of the "Okonogi" name, it likely was the Yamainu. Unfortunately no one is able to recognize them for what they are. There is an official TIP that explains the reason the phone number doesn't work is because they recently moved offices and accidentally put the order in an old envelope with the old telephone number, though this could've also have been a lie.
Q: The #34 Memos... were they all junk?
A: With the exception of the 'parasites' seeming to have some resemblance to Hinamizawa syndrome, you can dismiss all of Takano Miyo's scrapbooks as a lot of disinformation. Woman gets around, doesn't she?
Q: What is up with Keiichi shooting little girls for fun?
A: The full story which never makes it into the anime goes something like this, summarizing. Keiichi is leading an unhappy school life. However one day he takes an IQ test and it's revealed he's a genius. He gets thrown into the advanced class, and Keiichi enjoys the attention. He doesn't care about studying or being smart, he just likes the attention he gets from his teachers and parents when he brings home a good grade. This causes him to get into some friction with the other students, who leave rats on his desk. Keiichi picks up an interest in model guns, and buys a bb gun. Randomly, to work out the stress of being picked on at school and the stress of getting better grades, he finds a safe quiet place and starts shooting little girls who happen to be walking alone. He apparently has a lot of fun making them squirm and people being scared to let young girls go home safely, but then an incident happens. He shoots a very small girl in the back, but she turns to face him in response. Without realizing, Keiichi shoots her again, this time hitting her right in the eye. He runs away, but has an attack of conscience and tells the truth to his parents. They take him to the police to confess, which sets up the chain of events for the Maebaras moving to Hinamizawa.
Q: Why does Keiichi suddenly remember himself going crazy in Onikakushi-hen?
A: It's a miracle. Really, there's no explanation given for why it happened or why it happened when it happened. Perhaps that the scenarios were so similar with what was happening had something to do with it.
Q: Where does Rena get all the gasoline she uses to douse the school? Let alone the equipment and know-how to make a BOMB from a kitchen timer?
A: It's mentioned briefly that Rena withdrew the equivalent of several thousands of dollars from her family's bank account. That's probably all the explanation we'll get.
Q: Does Rika really fight off Rena bare-handedly?
A: In the original games, Rika fights Rena with a mop. ...Yeah. XD
There is a bad-ass little scene in the game that goes like this:
Rena: "You're not Rika... where's Rika-chan!?"
Rika: *black Rika voice* "Rika is... right here." *normal loli voice* "Mii~ Nipa~ :D"
Rena: "I see... so the Furude family are all aliens..."
Q: Why don't the police try to shoot Rena with a sniper or something when she's fighting with Keiichi on the roof?
A: In the games, that exact thing happens. A police sniper starts lining up to take a shot, but Mion interrupts him telling him that she can't allow him to do that, because Keiichi is going to talk Rena down, and does the officer really want to explain how he had to kill a little girl? So the police let them fight.
Q: Why doesn't Keiichi use the pepper spray he gets from the police against Rena?
A: Apparently Keiichi has a flashback to the part of Meakashi-hen where Rika tried to stop Shion with the pepper spray, but it only made Shion's condition worse. He resolved to not use the spray no matter what.
Q: Who was the 'Rena' seen at the granary?
A: There's no real explanation that we're given... but it was likely just a mistake.
Q: Is there anything else which was in the games which wasn't in the anime?
A: Yes. Right before Rena kills Rina and Teppei, she has a long soliloquy about how there are two types of people: friends, and enemies. Enemies are people who work to undermine your happy world. They can't be reasoned with, they can't be made friends with. Doing so only helps them hurt you more. All you can do is kill them. It's Rena's philosophy she gained after her parents' bad break up. (Her mother is an 'enemy'.)
Besides this, the speech with Keiichi is a bit longer. He talks about how if Satoshi came to him for help, he gladly would've helped killed Satoshi's aunt for him. Rika also gives a short speech as 'dark Rika'.
There's also a variation where Rena succeeds in blowing up the school. As it happens, Rena tells Keiichi: "You can apologize to me now."
Q: So after this, do the kids live?
A: Nope. In the original games as well as evidenced by the 'reunion' episode in the next chapter, the Hinamizawa Gas Disaster occurs and everyone dies.
Q: Why does Rena survive in the 'Reunion' episode?
A: Possibly because even if Keiichi talked her down, Rena still took an entire school full of children hostage and almost burned them all to death. You can't do that and not get a night of questioning by the police at least. If they kept her in jail, she wouldn't be targeted by the Yamainu.
Though this might also be an altercation used by the anime to make things more interesting, I believe she dies with the rest of the kids when Hinamizawa is destroyed in the original games.
Q: Regarding the 'Reunion' episode, the syringe Rika had in this chapter was the antidote to Hinamizawa syndrome?
A: Yep. Apparently Rika went with it to offer Rena as a last-ditch effort to stop the tragedy. But she gave up too easily.
